I like my Kindle Fire, but…

I’m not in love.

You know, I guess the Kindle Fire is pretty cool, because tablets are cool in general.  It’s a high-quality display.  I like very much that it’s made with Gorilla Glass.  The tiny speakers are eminently decent.  I like the rubberized housing, too.

But the lack of external storage is bugging me a little more than I thought it would.  No Bluetooth bothers me mostly because there’s no obvious external keyboard solution, which is going to be a serious problem if I plan to use it for mobile blogging.  And, while I’ve never been a fan of on-screen keyboards, this one seems even more glitchy than the one on my lowball Android phone.

Now I might be able to solve the latter two problems by rooting it, as there is a Bluetooth chip in the thing.  But even apart from the expected timidity such generates in me, I do think the Amazon.com integration is very well done, and of course I’d lose that.

I just don’t know yet.  I think I’m going to keep it through the Thanksgiving weekend—coddling it a bit in case I do decide to return it—and make a decision then.

  1. I can’t decide on how I feel about the lack of external storage thing with my tablet, but of course solutions like dropbox help me out there. On the plus side, it does have bluetooth enabled so I can use the keyboard, which is necessary should I ever want to write more than two sentences at a time.

Is there not an app that will drive the bluetooth chip without rooting the thing? I found one to drive my audio controls right on screen.

  2. I have an iPad (got it for free at a Christmas party) and I use it for mainly an eReader. I don’t have much use for it in any other capacity. But, I’d LOVE to get an iPad 2, seems to be more compact and I am trying to make more of an effort to use my iPad for other things; when I remember to take it with me that is. Looking forward to seeing if you decided to keep or or not.

  3. I’m leaning toward keeping it. I think I’m going to get $199 of value out of it. The quality of the screen is probably the dealmaker, if there is one thing.
