Thursday miscellanea #137

  • Gabrielle Giffords had more successful surgery this week, just after attending her husband’s shuttle launch.  Her progress is remarkable, is it not?
  • Let’s put UFO’s Strangers in the Night near the top of the list of albums I should have been relishing for the past three decades, but only added to my consciousness a month ago.  If you are a fan of any hard rock and/or heavy metal from the late ’60s through the early ’90s and you don’t have this album, go get it right now.
  • Want to see if a web site is blocked in China?  Check it out here.  BoWilliams.com shows its face in Hong Kong, but on none of the other tests.  I’m guessing this is why.
  • I’m a little disheartened that this is necessary, but apparently it is.  Guys, please stop talking to me at the urinal.  When I have my penis in my hand, the list of people I want to chat with is very, very short, and I don’t need to check it to know you’re not on it.
  • Big Spring Jam is back this year.  More or less.  I guess.  Apparently it’s Friday and Saturday only now, and some acts are actually going to be inside the Von Braun Center.  Schedule coming in another week or two.
  • Among the many intriguing offerings on streaming Netflix is the miniseries of The Stand.  Been checking it out again on my auxiliary monitor, for the first time in 17 years.  It remains significantly inferior to the book, which is one of the finest I’ve ever read.  However, I’ll admit it is better than I remember.  (Jamey Sheridan in particular was inspired casting.)  I wonder how much sense it would make to someone who hasn’t read it, though.
  • Speaking of such things, if the world really does end on Saturday, then part of me can’t help being irritated that I quit smoking.
