Thursday miscellanea #124

  • We got a robocall last night delaying the boys’ school this morning two hours.  Then we got another one about 7 this morning announcing the school was closed for the day.  I decided to rush into the living room and tell the boys that this morning’s call said school had returned to normal hours for the day, and they needed to get ready quickly.  (Good joke, but Aaron got mad at me because he bit so hard.)
  • They closed my work the same way—first delaying two hours, then shutting down for the day.  With my whole day unexpectedly derailed, I decided it was a fine morning for me to make pancakes, eggs, and bacon.
  • You know, oddly enough, I’d still rather fold laundry hurriedly in the morning before departing for work than sit at rest and consider that I haven’t done it yet.  You’d think the copious additional time in which to accomplish the task wouldn’t be so demotivating.  What is that about?
  • I thought this was a solid, but not great, year for Super Bowl commercials.  My favorite was the Audi A8 spot (“release the hounds!”).  The Richard Lewis/Roseanne Snickers commercial wasn’t bad either.
  • Did you hear we’re running out of helium?
  • Tommy, Trent, and I saw a red Ferrari F430 Spider on the way back from lunch one day last week.  Ferrari has really done a good job retaining its visual identity without getting complacent.  (I thought the Enzo Ferrari was pretty homely, but even it couldn’t have been mistaken for any other marque.)  For the most part, the company keeps a good sense of the timeless, as opposed to faddish.  That’s not easy.
  • I stopped for “just a second” on The Cooler on HDnet the other night, and took about two minutes to commit to watching the whole thing again.  I really enjoy the combination of gritty and fanciful in this movie.  One scene is lifted a little too intactly from Casino, but that’s its biggest crime.  Plus, it’s not like that’s a bad movie to rip off.

  1. My dad actually convinced my brother and I it had snowed on 1 April one year. Cruel joke.

Omlettes and cinnamon bagels here…nice snowcation, but the boys will be going to school for like 3 straight months before a break.

Watched the last half of _Good Will Hunting_ this am. Forgot how well written that was and how much I like Robin Williams when he’s not acting manic.

  2. French Toast – can you believe my kids have never had real french toast? I asked if they wanted some, and they said, “ewwwww, we have that at school and it’s gross!” Not if it’s made right, and it has to be fresh, hot off the griddle.

    They snarfed it.

  3. BamaDan, Good Will Hunting is indeed a nice piece of work. Know what you mean about the dramatic Robin Williams, too!

‘seester, I can believe that. When I was about 5, my mother finally threatened to spank me to get me to try chili. Then I ate three bowls of it and wanted more, but she wouldn’t give me any more because she was afraid I’d get sick. I remember that first taste very well.

    Also, I didn’t eat pizza until I was 14.

  4. We just caught a dusting here, and HSH was MOST unhappy that her school defiantly remained open.

If only the Scuderia could assemble an F1 team that matches their end product – commercial or professional – I’d be a much happier camper.

  5. I want to like F1 – certainly the hardware is very impressive – but I just don’t care for the lack of ovals. I’ve slowly become accustomed to the IndyCar schedule, which splits ovals and road/street courses roughly evenly, but I guess there’s just too much NASCAR redneck in me from my childhood to get used to no ovals at all. 🙂
