Back from EAA AirVenture

Well, we’re back from the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

My Uncle Drennen had the marvelous idea of getting a group together for the greatest air show in the world.  So he, his son Renn, Renn’s father-in-law Phillip, Dad, and I flew to Chicago, rented a motor home, drove it to the show, and stayed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

We had a fine, fine time, and I’ll blog about it more tomorrow, accompanied by a few of the roughly 1,100 photographs (edited:  exactly 1,455 photographs) I took.  For now, I’m exhausted from traveling (and walking; the venue is beyond enormous, and my legs are complaining in new and interesting ways).

This was my first time to set foot in Wisconsin, and I will take a moment and say thanks, folks.  Everyone with whom we interacted was warm, friendly, and helpful, whether they were show employees, gas station attendants, restaurant servers, passersby, or whatever.

That was pleasantly disarming.  I can’t say my expectations were particularly negative, but I found a pervasive cheerful, easygoing attitude that I’ve never encountered outside the South.  I’m delighted to broaden my knowledge thusly.

Anyway, more tomorrow.  Bed now.

  2. I went to the Oshkosh show with my folks when I was 16, just five short years ago (give or take a few decades). It was awesome. I used to love airshows until they got so popular that it became an insane madhouse filled with drunk morons. Oh wait, I think they were there then too. Ah well, good times. We live really close to Luke Air Force base and they put on a show once a year. I have yet to convince Mister C to take me, most likely because it’s always 1000 degrees the weekend they do it. I’ll have to work on him some more.

  3. kemtee, there are at least two more posts coming on it. It was really, really something!

Mirth, I had no idea about this thing. WOW.

The temperature was lovely, but the mosquitoes were nearly unbelievable. Oh, and BTW, they don’t sell alcohol on the grounds. Perhaps that’s a recent change.

  4. Bo – I don’t believe they ever served alcohol at Oshkosh, but I do think you used to be able to bring in coolers and such. Glad you had fun and I’m sure I’m not the only one that would love to see some pictures (hint, hint).
