Yes, Johnson thinks Guam might tip over; no, it wasn’t a metaphor

I haven’t had much to say about the recent comments of Congressman Hank Johnson (D-GA), on his concern that moving 8,000 Marines and their families to Guam would create an imminent danger of it tipping over.

He’s since tried to undo the damage by saying he was speaking metaphorically.  Indeed, I dismissed the initial reports (and didn’t blog about it) because I thought that must be the case.  I thought surely we had some deliberately dense haymaking going on; that Johnson must have been speaking of a “tipping point,” socioeconomically or whatever.  Each side of the aisle does that to the other, regularly and obnoxiously.

Then I saw the video.  No chance, folks.  This is a grown man serving in Congress who thinks Guam might tip over.  If you’ve missed it, here it is. The quote is at 1:15.

I love the moment of stunned silence.

Then I read something else yesterday about Johnson’s hepatitis C affecting him mentally, and making him confused sometimes.  (Ah, okay.  Is that supposed to be better?)  I really sort of doubt that, too.  He’s perfectly coherent throughout; he just happens to be talking about pink giraffes.

He’ll probably be back, too.  According to Johnson’s Wikipedia article, “the 4th is one of the most Democratic districts in the South.”  (This district also sent Cynthia McKinney to Washington, incidentally.)

Oh, and he was definitely a “yes” on “health care reform.”  I’m so glad we’re entrusting Our Betters with every aspect of our lives, aren’t you?

  2. I’m considering writing his office a letter and seeing whether I get an entertaining response. If this were my representative, I’d be calling for his resignation.

  3. Oh, see Hep C makes sense. I blame the entire Dubose Era on Hep C, so I can see that.

Anyone want to explain to Congressman Johnson that Sawyer, Locke, and Jack don’t live on Guam?

  4. Saddest thing is that the electorate in the 4th district will not even be aware of any of this. They’ll vote for him again.
