From 1789 to 2008, the United States government borrowed a total of $5.8 trillion. (That’s every administration up to, but not including, Barack Obama’s.)
Now sadly, we’re an increasingly innumerate nation, and for too many people one word ending in -illion is rather like any other, so I’m also going to write that out: that’s $5,800,000,000,000.
With me? Okay.
Now, in just the first three years of the Obama administration, the United States government is set to borrow $4.4 trillion. That’s $4,400,000,000,000.
Please read An Obama-Sized Government at National Review Online today. Be sure to look back at this post of mine as well, when we were talking about “only” $3,500,000,000,000.
Hey, how about a howler from all the way back in November 2008?
“We will go through our federal budget – page by page, line by line – eliminating those programs we don’t need, and insisting that those we do operate in a sensible cost-effective way.” – Barack Obama
I wonder how that’s going?
