Sugar Bowl

Back when I played competitive chess once in a while, I’d occasionally draw a child (8, 9, 10 years old, ’round in there) for an opponent in a tournament round.

Playing chess against a child sucks.  If you win, then it’s “hey, look, you beat an eight-year-old!  Woo woo for you!”  But if you lose, it’s “ha ha ha!  An eight-year-old beat you!”  There is no pleasant outcome.

That’s a little how I feel about Alabama going in to play Utah in the Sugar Bowl.  I’d have much preferred Ohio State, or for Oregon State to have taken care of business and made USC available.  But oh well.  (I suppose this is a mild complaint, but I have no sour grapes.  I was merely struck by the fitness of the analogy.)

Roll Tide, and thanks for a great year, guys.

Stay tuned for a non-football post tomorrow.  I promise.

  1. Jenny: I’m not too concerned about a letdown, given the timing (though I’m glad we’re not playing this game next week).

And I’ll get there too. Hell, I was pumped for the Independence Bowl in Shula’s last year–the one coached by Joe “WE JUST GOTTA STOP THAT LITTLE INSIDE TRAP!!!!!!!” Kines? A more meaningless bowl game was never played, but I was all over it. It was the Tide. 🙂
