Doe vs. 2004 Odyssey: Is this the end for the current Leamobile?

Lots on my mind today, and just as I got ready to set something down for you Lea hit a doe on the way back from a band boosters meeting.

This is a 2004 Honda Odyssey. We bought it new at Decatur Honda from my college classmate and former colleague Micah. The ownership experience has been largely a Honda one, which is to say highly satisfactory, except that the paint is defective. It occasionally falls off in sheets.

We had a significant percentage of it repainted under a Honda bulletin, but even that hasn’t been good, because I don’t think they prepped it properly. Chips much too easily. Peels in alarmingly large quantities from time to time. It’s hard to build a great deal of pride in ownership when the paint relentlessly sheds.

To be fair, I have enjoyed the vehicle otherwise. It is a fine, fine interstate weapon. What else can take my family of four and all our stuff to the beach in air-conditioned comfort at 77 mph and deliver 25 mpg? And set me there utterly unfatigued? Moreover, the few times I’ve had an odd problem with it, I’ve been able to Google or Bing it and get a Honda part number back, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to install it. (See: windshield wiper relay; air conditioner logic board.)

This car crossed 200,000 miles today, and even before the cervine collision, its cosmetics weren’t great. I think there’s a solid chance it’s totaled. We’ll see. (I just wish I hadn’t put tires on it a month ago.)

I love adventures, don’t you?
