Thursday miscellanea #633

  • So pleased to see positive news about Bills safety Damar Hamlin! He is reportedly awake, holding hands with family members, and “appears to be neurologically intact.”
  • Barbara Walters is one of the first people I can remember seeing on television, on The Today Show. What a tremendous and groundbreaking career she had. Goodbye to a giant. RIP.
  • There are a lot of interesting things out there about the work culture at Buc-ee’s. For example, there are numerous reports on the series of tubes—too many for me to dismiss as merely smoke—that you can be fired on the spot if a manager spots you using your mobile phone. There is heavy audio and video surveillance of employees. Also, the only break you get on an eight-hour shift may be to use the restroom, and you are timed. The money’s good, but that may be just about all. Indeed.com for starters.
  • We caught the second Knives Out mystery movie on Netflix last night. We all enjoyed it, though I’d call it considerably sillier than the first one.
  • Yes, there is going to be a Corvette SUV, which will probably be the first big splash for Corvette as its own make, and not a Chevrolet model. I’m not sure any new car news could surprise me anymore.
  • It would cause me no particular heartburn if Georgia repeats, but wouldn’t it be great to see TCU win it all?
  • My unexpectedly, comically, absurdly lengthy HVAC saga has a reasonable chance of resolving favorably this weekend. Positive thoughts appreciated.

  1. A previous post of yours piqued my interest regarding employment at Buc-ee’s. While I don’t have any problems whatsover regarding cellphone usage, some of the break and meal issues are quite a surprise.

I am so tired of encountering employees on their cellphones who give me the “I’ll be with you in a minute” greeting.

    • I agree that people in customer service jobs shouldn’t be on their phones, but firing on the spot for a single infraction seems a bit much.

I guess it’s just disappointing to me that the atmosphere/vibe Buc-ee’s works so hard to foster in its stores for the customer is not only not replicated to any degree, but seemingly actively counteracted, for the employee.

Disney has consistently high standards for its customers but seems to do a better job with its team in that regard, for example. There’s nothing wrong with requiring high performance for a job, but a lot of what you read about Buc-ee’s out there just sounds gleefully mean. I don’t get that.
