Thursday miscellanea #617

  • Monkeypox!
  • Several people have shared with me that Del Taco will be building six new restaurants in northern Alabama. Now, 40-year-old fond memories being what they are, my enthusiasm was a bit reserved, as there’s no way 2022-23 Del Taco is as good as I remember it being when I was 12. However, I have heard from two different friends who each tell me it’s excellent today. (It doesn’t have to be very good to be better than Taco Bell, but never mind.) So we’ll see!
  • I’ve “known” for the past several years that the next car I bought would be practical, but still a handler with some oomph and probably a manual. I was thinking GTI, or maybe Civic Si. The Elantra N is intriguing. I haven’t been out to shop yet—that’s 12-18 months from now or thereabouts—but it’s hard not to notice how much Accord, Camry, or Altima I can get for the same money. And shoot, in today’s world, purchasing and driving a simple four-door sedan is a radical act.
  • Nothing drives home how much more populous this area is now than a trip to Costco. There’s no good time to go anymore. Costco is notoriously conservative about building locations, but I notice Raleigh metro has three, and we’re about a quarter of that size here. So maybe we’ll get another Costco in northern Alabama soon. I think just off exit 347 on I-65 would be an ideal location.
  • So far I don’t think Bosch: Legacy is quite the masterpiece that Bosch is, but it’s very good. (I wish we had a way to opt out of the commercials, but at least there aren’t many of them.) I love that it’s a seamless sequel. The writing remains sharp, and tense scenes are so much more so when you really like the hero! Please don’t post spoilers.
  • The Orion Amphitheater has opened to universal rave reviews. Happy to have this venue and looking forward to visiting.
  • Practice for the 106th Indianapolis 500 is underway. Qualifying is this weekend. We have exactly 33 entries this year, so no bumping, but there still should be some excitement. Long way out to place a lot of trust in the forecast, but weather looks good so far. Can’t wait!
