Thursday miscellanea #600

  • An Oxford High School classmate of mine succumbed to COVID-19 last night. God be with Traci Snow Arnold’s family and friends.
  • Mia’s headed back to school this weekend, and they’re masking indoors. I really hope they don’t go to online only. Thanks again, folks. Thanks a pantload.
  • According to the 2020 census, Huntsville is now Alabama’s largest city. The impact of this is really rather limited when you consider that Birmingham’s metro area is still more than twice the size of Huntsville’s, so this might be destined to be a good trivia question for a while.
  • The zoo that is supposedly coming to the Huntsville area grabbed a bit of news cycle this week with site selection. Bluntly, I think this zoo is a stupid idea for several reasons, and I hope it comes nowhere near getting off the ground. My fear is it will, but just barely, and then limp along continuously desperate for money. Sounds great for animal welfare, doesn’t it? I may write more about it. Haven’t decided yet.
  • Did you see that Alex Hendrix has a new single out? Go get “Blame It On Mercury” on Amazon.com right now (and I mean buy it). It’s a whole freakin’ dollar.
  • It was a long hot day at the Music City Grand Prix, but we had a good time. I was happy to see it was enthusiastically and robustly attended. Objectively, the race was awful. About half of it was run under caution, and there were two red flags. The course needs to be opened up and perhaps simplified to eliminate some of the tightest stretches. Hoping for considered improvements next year. (Sidebar: I’m also not thrilled about the three-day festival model and how much preference is given to purchasers of three-day tickets over one-day tickets, but if it’s critical for the event’s success, I’ll consider it a necessary evil.)
  • Lots of rain over the next week or so, but not a lot of 90s. I’ll take it. We’re not in the home stretch yet, but the home stretch grows closer.
