Thursday miscellanea #575

  • We got about 4″ of snow in less than three hours before we went to bed last night. Not much problem with travel today while the temperature is a few degrees above freezing, but our street isn’t any better than “slushy” right now. So this might still be a problem for side streets even tomorrow.
  • We’re 0-for-2 on trying to go out to eat with friends because of winter storm warnings. We had plans Monday. Then we moved them to last night. Now we’ve rescheduled for week after next. We’ll see how that works out.
  • Dolly Parton has asked the Tennessee state legislature to cease considering placing a statue of her on the Capitol grounds, and you should read her statement.
  • I tried a Cold Brew Cleanse bar from Dr. Squatch this time. I’m not much on coffee things that aren’t coffee, but I wanted to give it a go just for completeness. It’s OK—the smell is subtle and more like chocolate, and the exfoliation is good—but it’s vanishing far more quickly than any other Squatch bar I’ve tried (as in, it may be gone in eight showers, as opposed to the 18 or so I get from other bars). Were it a favorite, I’d find that irritating.
  • Lea and I are on Waking the Dead right now. We picked it up after enjoying its spinoff The Body Farm. Waking the Dead isn’t as good, but it’s satisfying enough. I’m even putting up with standard definition for it. We’re also digging Prodigal Son.
  • A letter in Robin Miller’s Mailbag this week describes the Daytona 500 (and by extension, all Daytona and Talladega races) as follows:  “It’s disgusting, and I disgust myself every year by watching it because I’m race-starved by February and have a need for speed.” He’s referring to the manufactured and ubiquitous last-lap crash, and man, do I ever relate. I remember every year, but I can never quite talk myself out of watching.
  • Perseverance has landed safely! I have a good feeling about this one. I think confirmation of extraterrestrial life is imminent.
