Thursday miscellanea #572

  • “Hammerin'” Henry “Hank” Aaron, the true home run king and the most iconic Atlanta Brave ever, has died in his sleep at 86. RIP. Thank you, sir.
  • Apparently there is some kerfuffle about Disney World serving a grilled cheese sandwich using glazed doughnuts as the bread. I’ve not had such, but I have had what is commonly known as a Luther Burger (after Luther Vandross), which is a bacon cheeseburger using glazed doughnuts as a bun. I didn’t like it. In fact, I was surprised at how repellent I found it. I just ate the insides out of it and left the doughnuts, as I recall.
  • Finished the third season of Cobra Kai last night. I got a bit more excited than I expected to about starting it, but at the end of it I’m feeling kind of over it. I think three seasons of scaffolding is enough to stretch the story over satisfactorily. The “need” for a fourth feels manufactured.
  • The new Cheap Trick single is called “Light Up the Fire,” and it smokes. Turn it up!
  • The next piece of my healthy living armor that I’m picking back up is Thursday fasting. Today is my first one in a while. I remember with my head that it’s not that big a deal to get used to it. I hope I get a reliable return of the sounder sleep that consistently accompanied it the first time around.
  • General Motors has pledged to eliminate its sale of gasoline- and diesel-powered passenger cars and SUVs by 2035. This is a remarkable commitment, and though I’m skeptical it’s prudent/possible that quickly, I’ll admit I haven’t done a great deal of research on the question in the past year or two. I’ll want to look a little deeper into this.
  • As in most years, the Rolex 24 at Daytona sports car endurance race this weekend narrowly preserves the streak of consecutive weekends with either football or racing. (Wow, late January is thin for me as far as sports go.) I’ve tried hard to like sports car racing. There are some things I think are interesting about it, but I don’t like it anywhere near as much as I do even NASCAR, with which I definitely have a love-hate relationship.
