Thursday miscellanea #567

  • President Trump is making it clear in several ways that he knows he’ll be leaving the White House on January 20. He is also keeping his dishonest rhetoric as fiery as ever. The irony is that he is not behaving in a manner consistent with effectively fighting another day. I am absolutely fine with that.
  • Ready for dog-sized lizards? The Argentine black-and-white tegu is on the way. We just need to figure out a delicious way to cook it and stoke demand for it, right? Oh, by the way, they’ll eat nearly anything; they can run fast; and though they are not aggressive, they can bite with enough force to sever a finger or toe. Have a nice day.
  • Our Wahlburgers is supposed to open this month. I expect it’ll be January before I venture out to review it. In fact, we have enough new players now that I need to revisit a burger review article.
  • Walter Williams has passed away. What a great loss for discourse. His erudition and ceaseless civility were a rare one-two indeed. He was one of only two Rush Limbaugh guest hosts I would reliably listen to. RIP.
  • After recent hand tool triumphs, I’ve gotten semi-obsessed with upgrading my mechanics’ tools. (There is genuine need in a few places, but most of this is want. I’m not deceiving myself about that.) I’ve been impressed with Capri Tools and Tekton as good sweet spots between box store tools and truck tools.
  • The newly-minted BYU at Coastal Carolina game is an intriguing match-up, but it’ll be unsatisfying no matter what. If Coastal wins, then the CFB Playoff committee is vindicated. If BYU wins, then well, it was Coastal Carolina, so of course they would.
  • One of my favorite events of the year is my church’s Christmas Eve candlelight service. Obviously this is a non-starter in the age of COVID-19, so we may have a bonfire instead. Hoping the weather is cooperative.
