Early reports are that his injuries are primarily orthopedic, so there is reason to be optimistic about his prognosis. This is fantastic news. While we were waiting to hear yesterday, it all felt entirely too much like the day Dan Wheldon died. So glad he’s going to be OK.
As far as we’ve come with driver safety—and it is very far—it remains an objectively foolish thing to do to strap yourself into a race car and hit the throttle. Sometimes it’s a little too easy to forget that.
Feel better soon, Mr. Wickens. You’ve had a fantastic rookie year in IndyCar, and we look forward to enjoying your talents for many years to come.
