Actress Charlotte Rae, best known for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of beloved housekeeper-turned-housemother-turned-restaurateur Edna Garrett on Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life, has died. She was 92 years old.
As memorable as that character was, those shows are prime examples of how far episodic television has come. I remember catching Facts on Nick at Nite back when there was such a thing and being amazed that it enjoyed the ratings it did when new.
Nevertheless, doubtless Mrs. Garrett is another mainline connection to my childhood. I never saw or heard of Charlotte Rae resenting that legacy for herself—one that many with similar length and breadth to their resumes might consider beneath them. Such a delight when you get a strong sense that celebrities are well-adjusted and appreciative people.
God be with her friends and family. RIP.
