Thursday miscellanea #452

  • Lent has begun, and for the first time in several years I never really came up with something from which to abstain. I’m thinking about, and still praying about, what sort of “positive option” I may employ this year.
  • Nathan and I watched Apocalypse Now together on Tuesday. It was his first time to see it, and my first time in probably ten years. His first comment at the end was that he was torn between wanting to be distracted by something happier and wanting to delve into it with me. I said that’s about right. Go ahead and distract yourself. It’s here for us to watch again, after all.
  • I half-skimmed the story about the couple who liquidated their lives and bought a sailboat, then sank it two days in and put up a GoFundMe in response. I missed until this week that they were 26 and 24. Kids, go get your jobs back. That’s the actual fuel for dreams. (Hint: you have to stay at them longer than your mid-20s, dumbasses.)
  • Can’t yet speak to longevity, but my initial impression of the $12 Amazon Essentials polo shirts is highly positive. The cloth is not quite as heavy as that used in Land’s End polos, but it’s close. The fit is excellent, and the collars don’t curl. More colors, please!
  • Looks like Danica will drive an Ed Carpenter Racing car at the Indianapolis 500. This is good news. She should have as legitimate a shot to do well as anyone. I was concerned that she would wind up with a shoestring budget team, which might have made equipment a hindrance.
  • Closet purge is complete. Everything in there is now something I can and will wear. Now, to drive around the stuff for charity in the car trunk for the next six weeks…
  • As I type we are forecast to have a cool Saturday. After that, the lowest forecast daytime high between now and March 1 is 61ยบ.
