Thursday miscellanea #320

  • I put Windows 10 on my netbook this week, but couldn’t find a suitable video driver. Maybe I’ll look harder this weekend. I got Windows 8.1 to display properly without a supported driver. I just don’t remember what I did.
  • Madison Police has a charcoal gray, previous-generation Impala that I suspect has been an excellent unmarked car because of its alloy wheels. (Unmarked units usually have lowball wheels that give them away.) Well, now that car has exactly those: steel wheels with plastic covers. (Guess this is to throw those of us who’ve pulled it into our world view.) I didn’t process it as a police car this morning on County Line Rd. (Neither did the unfortunate guy running about 65 in the red Chevy S-10.)
  • Latest Cortana quirk: Shuffling my music works great, but she always starts with Tesla’s “2 Late 4 Love.” It does seem random after that. Odd.
  • No red meat or alcohol for Lent. I have considered eliminating mammals from my diet before. I may see how this is sitting with me in a few weeks and consider whether it’s a permanent change.
  • I got email this morning telling me that ESPN and ESPN2 had come to Roku. That solves most of the football problem. I have to have NBCSN for IndyCar. I think when that’s a thing, we really will get rid of cable TV.
  • Upon learning that “my” RadioShack would remain open, I idly wondered whether the electronics-tutorial-in-a-box from my youth survived in 2015. It does. I might ask for that for my birthday. Heh.
  • “Dad, teach us to play chess?” Sock us in tomorrow, winter!

  1. I’ve been told by a rather high ranking member of Madison PD that they don’t really go looking to give speeding tickets. They think it’s a racket. The only time they’ll pull someone over is for something that’s bordering on excessive and actually dangerous.

On county line where the speed limit is 50 for the most part and traffic usually does 55 at most, going 65 will probably deserve to get you pulled over. That kind of driving on a road that primarily serves residential neighborhood and 3 schools is a bit excessive. Unless the school zones are active (in which case don’t be in a hurry), traffic moves so consistently that you won’t get anywhere particularly quicker on county line with that extra 10 mph.

I’d guess it was kids anyway, which gets them a notch more attention.

We’re also leaning toward moving to something like a Roku (based on some recent discussions and developments, Roku seems to be in the lead). We already have a Chromecast which has supplanted our PS3 as our primary Netflix device. Once we get official word that HBO is going to sell an online only subscription, Dish will almost surely be getting a call.

    • Tahm, I don’t drive unsafely on County Line, though I have been stopped and warned for 60 in a 50 with the cruise set on 57, corroborated by GPS.

I want to keep up with such things because briefly going to 85 or so on 565 is something I occasionally do to recast a situation (for example). I’d get stopped then too, even though an 85 in a 70 that I deliberately choose on a limited-access highway is likely to be considerably safer than 65 in a 50 on a residential/light commercial thoroughfare.

  2. Sounds like the logic that shuffles your list has the ever popular (especially with first year CS students) “off-by-1” error.
