  • Couldn’t tell you the last time I sat and watched a baseball game. I watched almost all of Game 7 last night. Sorry, Royals. I was your fan for three hours. Maybe that’s what did you in.
  • My bottle of my friend Jason’s smoked red moruga hot sauce has gotten half again as hot since I bought it. The flavor is so good that I want to use it on and in lots of things, but I’m using smaller and smaller drops!
  • Relatedly, Scott Roberts has substantially updated the best Scoville heat unit (SHU) scale on the web. Check it out.
  • I like the Matthew McConaughey Lincoln spots. I do. I liked the first one the first time I saw it. I think it’s an artistically solid effort to do something different with a car commercial.
  • Of course, my preferred narrative is Auburn deals Ole Miss its second SEC loss this weekend and Alabama wins out. An Auburn fan has a steeper mountain right now. They need the same two losses from Mississippi State that we need from Ole Miss—only Mississippi State doesn’t have any losses yet.
  • Quick, name an iconic rock band named after a sex toy! Steely Dan took its name from the Steely Dan III—a dildo in William S. Burroughs’ 1959 novel Naked Lunch.
  • We just might need the heat by Saturday night. Won’t need it long—high of 60 forecast for Sunday—but a cool Friday, a cold Friday night, and a cooler Saturday might be enough to run it for a few hours.

  1. Auburn really doesn’t need Miss St to lose unless they want to have a chance at winning the SEC, which Alabama proved a few years ago is irrelevant to whether you can advance to the National Championship. Now the objective is to make the playoffs. We win out and we’re there, regardless of what happens to State. Given our schedule, that is a steep hill, but we take care of business and what happens to State is meaningless to our playoff spot.

    • …but the system that put Alabama in without winning the conference is gone, which was the point of my other post on the topic. One SEC team–the champion–will make the playoff. Think about it. You don’t really think the committee will let another SEC team sneak in when the first time it happened was the final nail in the coffin of the system that allowed it, do you?

It will happen sometime. I don’t think it happens this year. Florida State and the SEC champion get in, and two of three 1-loss conference champions get in.

      • That may be true, Bo. I’d be curious to see what happens if State wins out and either Auburn or Alabama also win the rest of their games. If a one-loss SEC team is ranked third going into the SEC championship game and Miss St wins, will they drop the one-loss team to allow a Power 5 in? I’m not so sure about how all of this is going to work.

        • If State wins out, they’re in. Mississippi State is the only team in the West that controls its own destiny today. Arkansas & A&M are eliminated, and everyone else but State needs help.

        • OK, I gotcha. Alabama and State couldn’t both win out because they still have to play each other. Auburn would be the only team your scenario could happen to–you’d be the only 1-loss team left in the West. We’d have 3 losses and so would Ole Miss.
