Three cool things to do with Google Street View

  1. Go to those places you’re kind of curious about, but probably won’t make it to. If you want to see what Bangkok looks like, then go. That’s a place I’d like to visit, but in terms of money and time, it’s almost certain to miss the cut. I can go have a look around for free, though. (Be advised: whether it’s Thailand or Iceland, most metropolitan areas are depressingly homogenous at their hearts. Move away from the city center a bit.)
  2. Check out the ‘hood from the comfort of your home. Here are the highest-crime neighborhoods in the United States, listed by intersection. You know, some of them look really innocuous, and I’d have never guessed one of the most dangerous areas in the United States would be in Omaha. An acquaintance of whom I am fond is a public defender in East St. Louis. I really wish she’d move now.
  3. Have your house blurred. Creeped out by the alarmingly detailed view anyone in the world can have of your domicile? Have Google blur it. Put your address in, and when it comes up, click Report a problem in the lower right. Follow the prompts from there. Cool, eh?
