Thursday miscellanea #274

  • Day one of Lenten vegetarianism went swimmingly. I have more options at Anaheim Chili than I realized. This is a good thing. I think I’ll have to stay out of Vietnamese and Thai places for the most part, though. They tend to head for the tofu on vegetarian dishes, and I don’t like tofu. Anyone have any other recommendations for great, vegetarian, tofu-less restaurant offerings in town?
  • Speaking of Anaheim Chili, I’ve occasionally considered parking at Jones Farm Park and walking to the restaurant. I tried that yesterday. It’s about 1.8 miles round-trip, which is well over a third of what I need in a day. (Adds about 30 minutes to my lunchtime, however.)
  • Looking forward to seeing some friends, maybe making some new ones, and learning a lot at Strategy 2014 next week.
  • Did you know there is a high-security Scientology compound right outside San Jacinto, CA? I knew I had read/heard some things about Scientology that sounded squirrelly to me, but if I ever knew about Gold Base, I forgot about it. Wow, are there ever some creepy stories about it. Go spend some time at that linked article and follow a few of the jump-offs when you have a little while. Some of what you’ll read sounds like North Korea.
  • As I type, the National Corvette Museum has pulled four of the eight affected Corvettes from the sinkhole. They even started the Blue Devil and drove it to the exit! The museum plans to exhibit the cars as is beginning in late April, and running through August 3. I believe we’ll need to go see them.
  • I had really high hopes for the rest of the Ring of Fire line after enjoying their XX-Hot Habanero sauce so much. Nothing I’ve had is bad, but neither is anything I’ve had particularly noteworthy. I like garlic very much, but the Chipotle & Roasted Garlic sauce quickly overwhelms any other flavor in your food with it. The Red Pepper & Garlic is tasty and sweet, but not at all hot. I still have the Garden Fresh to try when I have the fridge space.
  • Remix Education did a great job with our Upward awards ceremony on Monday night. Recommended.
  • When the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis fell in the Mississippi River in 2007, it took 13.5 months to replace it. That’s eight lanes of interstate, and it’s more than a third of a mile long. So why does Madison Pike have to be closed for 15 months?

  1. I like salad bars: Jason’s deli. Ruby Tuesday’s

Mei wei used to have a veggie bowl that was good.

Of course IHOP. Pancakes are generally meat free.

  2. 1892 East has an extensive vegetarian menu and they are locally sourced.

Chef Will the Palate is all vegan/vegetarian.

Tortoras and Venice Pizza (pasta and pizza/calzones are easy to make vegetarian, esp since you are keeping cheese/milk)

Shea’s Express: The Vermont Maple Salad is their best known and is meat free.

Emma’s Tea Room has some really delicious salads–they have a fruit salad and a veggie salad. Fair warning, you many be the only male in the place, it varies wildly from visit to visit.

  3. Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. This is going to be a challenge. I’m halfway through day three and significantly missing it.

Amanda, being the only man in a room full of women is not a problem. 🙂
