I saw on ScottRobertsWeb.com this morning that the Guinness organization has officially certified the Carolina Reaper as the new hottest chili pepper in the world.
The Carolina Reaper, developed by “Smokin'” Ed Currie of the PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina, turned in a sustained average of 1,569,383 Scoville heat units, with a peak level in the neighborhood of 2,200,000 Scoville heat units. For reference, regular Tabasco sauce checks in at 2,500 SHU, and a jalapeno on the hot end is about 8,000 SHU.
The Carolina Reaper is 196 times hotter than a jalapeno, and 628 times hotter than regular Tabasco.
