Of all the options I have for enjoying obscenely high volume from the home theater, I always reach for the opening titles of Superman first.
It’s “only” decent surround encoding coupled with a fine orchestral theme, and doubtless most would reach for something effects-laden instead. I just have a soft spot for it. (In my defense, if you wanted to isolate a single John Williams composition as his best, that’s probably it.)
I wanted to hear what the new receiver would do with it tonight. (I’m so delighted to have a fully functional receiver again!) Lea doesn’t care for the whole make-your-nose-bleed demonstration thing, but she’s gone to Kohl’s.
Funny thing—it’s still one of only a handful of titles I own on HD DVD. (Without getting up and looking, I think American Gangster, Casino, and A Scanner Darkly are the only others.) So we got to see and hear it using the antiquated, worthless hardware for which I still stubbornly maintain space in the entertainment center.
(Lesson learned on format wars. I haven’t the stomach anymore.)
I hope you’re having a good weekend.

I guess I’m a little old school, but the fly-bys in Top Gun always sound great with really good surround sound. And when the ship is breaking up in Titanic, too.
Good choice, bro. Truly an excellent flick. When I rebuild my system, I’ll have to ID a reference disk.
Jenny, funny you mention that one. I actually picked up Top Gun on Blu-ray not long ago, and haven’t yet experienced it. Lea and the boys will be at VBS tomorrow night. Perhaps that’s when it needs to debut.
BamaDan, it was all of $8.99 on Blu tonight from Amazon, so, yeah, gonna have to do that. 🙂
In terms of home theaters, the world is your oyster, my brother. I must insist you get carried away.
