Look who was waiting for me when I came out to lunch today!
This is a species of Magicicada, and part of Brood XIX. It just hatched, almost certainly this week, from an egg laid in 1998. How cool is that? They’ll only be here about a month, and they don’t bite, sting, spit, or anything else bad. So feel free to have a good close look at them. You won’t see another one around here until 2024.

I knew it I KNEW IT! All day outside, yesterday when I came in out of the buildings at work, I could hear that eerie sound they make off in the trees. At first, I didn’t notice it. But when it persisted, I asked someone if they thought it was the cicadas. Must have been a city gal because she looked at me like I was insane. She thought it was an alarm going off (all day long?) off in the distance.
Isn’t it great! We’ve been enjoying the sound of cicadas for a few days.(Lots of cicadas flying around the area.) My 6 month old grandson held his first bug yesterday at the Diverse Power meeting in Lagrange, Ga. He looked at it & wanted to eat it.
You know, I bet that little guy was waiting for you because he knew you’d put his picture on the internet 🙂 He is pretty cool
‘seester, the din at work is rather impressive.
Judy, welcome! Aren’t they cool?
Jenny, I think so too!
