On June 26, Bugatti test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel drove an orange-and-black Veyron 16.4 Super Sport to an average top speed of 268 mph (431 kph) at VW Group’s test facility at Ehra-Leissien. Representatives of Guinness World Records and the German Technical Inspection Agency – the keeper of such things in Deutschland – were on hand to verify the result.
Now that is getting the groceries in a big damned hurry.
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport lists for about $2.4 million, though I doubt anyone could buy one for twice that. Its 8-liter W-16 engine produces 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb-ft of torque. Want to dream? Play here.
You know what the best part of this is? You just know the fact that someone’s gotten all the way to 268 mph with a production car has a bunch of lunatics hanging around a shop somewhere saying “OK, shit, what’s it gonna take to get to 300?”

Is it wrong that it really bothers me that the quote says “average top speed?” What the hell is an average top speed? It’s either the top speed or it isn’t. **need coffee**
BamaDan, it’s 3x 88 mph with 4 mph left over, so heck yeah!
‘seester, it’s an average of two runs (265.9 and 269.8).
