Thursday miscellanea #91

  • Well, Shania Twain and Robert John “Mutt” Lange are finally all the way divorced.  I can’t possibly miss this news, because she calls and texts me incessantly to make sure I know it.  Now she’s started in with the lingerie photos.  I’m going to try to let her down easy.
  • Being an arrogant SEC person, I’ve barely paid any attention to the athletic conference realignment mutterings.  The Big Ten and the Pac-10 are going to raid the Big 12, leaving it an empty shell to collapse upon Kansas?  Is that it?
  • Had lunch with my fifth-grade girlfriend on Tuesday.  It was the first time I’d seen her in 27 years.  What a kick!
  • Hey, know what?  BP might not make it.  Wow, who could have ever guessed that?
  • I have a longtime online acquaintance who gauges the relative health of the economy by paying attention to how long freight trains are.  That’s probably not such a bad indicator.
  • I worked with a woman 10 years ago whose daughter is now a world-famous supermodel.  How about that?
  • Samuel Adams Latitude 48, currently available only two at a time in the Summer Styles half-case, is coming to six-packs this fall.  This is an eminently decent IPA.

  1. No comments on USC’s NCAA smackdown? I put it in the “I’ll believe it when I see it” bucket, fully convinced that any infractions found in L.A. will result in horrible penalties against Alabama.

I’m torn though as I used to travel to USC quite a bit and speak at a conference there. I like the place and have friends there. None of them played a down of football though.

  2. BD: While I’m not delighting in the sanctions against USC, I am glad that the punishment seems at least on par with what Bama got. Better give your SoCal friends some idea of what the next 5-6 years are gonna look like for them. Nobody knows better than we do.

Re: Conference Expansion. I’m not sure the SEC is going to feel compelled to do anything at this point. But if they do, it’ll most likely be GT, Clemson, Miami, and FSU. I hear talk that Slive has approached TA&M, but I don’t see that happening without UT.

  3. BamaDan, the Thursday miscellanea posts are often topical, but they’re rarely up-to-the-minute topical, because I usually write them the night before and schedule them. As for USC, I’m glad that asshole Kiffin will suffer, but I don’t have anything against the Pac-1 Trojans in general. Ugly uniforms. Great band.

Jenny, if we expand I’d love to get Georgia Tech back, and Clemson should have been in a long time ago. Put Tech in the West (with Georgia their permanent East opponent, obviously), and Clemson in the East. I could take or leave the FL schools, and I don’t want the Texas schools. Texas isn’t “southeastern,” and Arkansas is already marginal enough in that regard.

nhfalcon, Shania Twain is spectacularly good-looking. She’s about to the age to start hacking on herself, if she’s inclined that way. I hope she isn’t. I can’t stand that shit. I know we differ on that.

  4. Fight On!

Trojans got reamed. Not too bad this year, not so much 2011, but come 2012, it’s gonna suuuuuuuuucccccckkk for about 5+ years and Kiffin actually retaining that RB Coach-cum-bagman??? Serious? They’re going to be bad for a while very soon. Kiffin = Mike Shula

I think one of the most telling sanctions was the one forbidding non-athletic dept personnel from practices and sidelines. I’m looking at you, Snoop Dog. I’m looking at you, Will Farrell. Not so fast, Nick Lachey. Even crazy ass Jack Nicholson is banned. That was so much of USC’s problem – they appeared to flaunt the rock star atmosphere and I think it really pissed the NCAA COI off. I’m pretty sure oxygen pisses them off. And I know Gene Stallings pisses them off.

Texas can’t wait to whoop dat ass and really, with Kiffin staring blankly on the sidelines, can you blame them?

  5. OK, I don’t like the Latitude 48. I would like to know why I don’t like it. I know that I like wheat beers but, what is that strong flavor in the Latitude 48? And the Blackberry wheat tastes like cough syrup. Ugh!

  6. Jenny, you’re probably not a “hophead.” The dominant flavor in an India Pale Ale (IPA) is usually hops. Latitude 48 isn’t really one that clocks you in the melon, though. Just must be something about it for you.

On that note, since you like wheat beer, give Harpoon Crystal Wheat a try sometime. That was one that I should have liked, and instead I found it thoroughly repulsive.

I like the Blackberry Witbier OK, but I usually drink it right after the Light, meaning it’s my fifth-favorite (of six) in the box. 🙂

  7. I wouldn’t have an issue with joining the SEC, but I think Va. Tech would be a more enticing school for the SEC. We would just be whipping boys. The fan base and atmosphere is certainly here, but the team sure as hell isn’t.

I do wonder how much longer the Big Ten can get away with keeping that name. It’s going to get a tad absurd soon. They should consider The Big Midwest or something…

ND better jump on board or they will be left in the dust. If the major conferences expand to 16 teams as has been suggested, there will be no reason – or available open dates – to schedule them.

  8. Being an ASU SunDevil, I am THRILLED beyond words that USC finally got slapped good for their antics and that Kiffin will have to suffer with the consequences of his mentor’s actions. I’m gonna take great pleasure in seeing how this all plays out for USC.

Who the heck thought that dismantling the Big 12 was a good idea? Oh…wait…probably the same people who thought up the BCS nonsense.

  9. Hizzoner wants to know if TX politicians are going to get back into football, just like they did the last time the SEC courted A&M.

(And he’s incredibly pleased at the prospects of Kiffin’s forseeable future.)
