Gulf Shores 2009

The boys had an odd little 4-day weekend they called “fall break” this time around, and it was off to the Alabama Gulf Coast for us.

It was supposed to rain every day we were there, and it never did, so we had lots of luxurious beach time, with perfect breeze and temperature.  I think we saw a total of three jellyfish, all on the last day.

Rained almost all the way home, though.

Things we learned on the trip:

  • The Bates House of Turkey is only open for dinner if you make it by 6.  (We did have lunch there yesterday.)
  • The National Shrimp Festival, with which we accidentally coincided, did not have a significant negative effect on crowds outside the immediate area.
  • LuLu’s was much more nightclubby than we were expecting, with a guitarist/comedian singin’ ’bout bein’ done wrong by wimmens and what-not.  Food was competently prepared, but mostly unremarkable.  Her signature Crazy Sista Honey Ale was tasty, and not cloyingly sweet like I was dreading (any beer with “honey” in the name is usually DOA for me).
  • Qwirkle is a marvelous game for children and adults to play together with no compromises.  I asked that we bring it, and I was glad we had it.  We really enjoyed it.
  • Nathan and I even went to Tacky Jack’s to have breakfast one morning, where I was delighted to discover that I wasn’t blacklisted for my behavior last time.  Heh.

Good trip, and glad to be home.

  1. We did Memphis. Verrah cool. You’d approve, even if Graceland is a big waste of time/money.

Ah, Shrimp Fest…Mrs. BD and I have fond memories of a weekend escape to the gulf during college. And Foghat was playing? Cool!

  2. BamaDan: We did a cool trip to Memphis once, to see Cheap Trick at the Great Southern Beer Festival, all of which was even cooler than it sounds. Did the zoo the next day, which was also good. The only bad spot on the trip is that some idiot booked us into a poorly chosen motel (and then was the only one who slept). Glad you guys had fun. I’ll have to get your notes when I see you.

We didn’t even check out the festival. We were after the (relatively low-key) experience we always have, which turned out to be attainable, fortunately.

I also wrote this post about the Ohio State guy I ran into on the beach on Sunday.

  3. Yeah, seems I remember a tale about the Graceland Motel 6 or the like. Elvis Presley Blvd. looks a lot like the worst parts of Montgomery. We stayed at the Embassy Suites east of town. Children’s Museum is very cool. I was impressed with the zoo (and I’ve been to San Diego and Columbus zoos). I *really* liked the tour of Sun Studios – informative and fun.

  4. I thought I’d told that story recently.

Speaking of studios, I’d like to tour the Shoals sometime with someone who knows what the hell’s what over there.
