Farewell to Palin

palinbyeWell, Peggy Noonan pretty much barbecued Sarah Palin today.  Part of me wishes I had more bones to pick with Noonan’s analysis.

I continue to believe that Palin received far worse treatment from the media than any other presidential or vice-presidential candidate ever has.  I also continue to believe that a large part of said treatment is a direct result of her not fitting their prescribed template of a powerful woman.

However, today I made peace with the fact that I am unable to write a plausible narrative of continued political affection for Sarah Palin that includes her resignation as governor of Alaska.  That surprised me deeply.  It shouldn’t have been in the script.  That it is tells me she’s going to be a gear, not a motor, in any Republican recovery.

Perhaps as a well-paid pundit, she will remain influential enough to shape Republican principles and rhetoric positively.  That’s about as far as I’ll allow my hope for her to go anymore.

  1. I heard a local radio talk show host theorize that perhaps she’ll be the tip of the spear for a new political party, and that she would do so because she’s gown disillusioned with the Republican Party as it currently is because it’s grown too moderate.

    Hmmm….
