The Dark and Stormy Book Club is a year old this month. We have enjoyed rousing discussions of nine books and a handful of poems. It’s a good time.
Except for the fact that mostly, we’re talking to ourselves. And I do enjoy that, being rather fond of both Mrs. Chili and Saintseester and their insights, but there’s a certain egoism here too (at least for me). After all, a large part of the point of making it publicly accessible is the hope of building an audience. And a few of y’all are coming, but many more aren’t. I know personally of several readers of this blog who would have a great time engaging us on Dark and Stormy, but have never made the effort. Please do so.
Look, I know you don’t have time for a book club, but that’s most of the point. None of us have time for a book club either. All of the Dark and Stormy hosts are full-time professionals and full-time parents, and when we crafted this thing, we took those non-negligible factors into account. We read a book a month, fercryinoutloud. You have time for that. This is the book club for people who don’t have time for a book club, dig?
So join us for the next show. Mrs. Chili has selected The Book Thief by Markus Zusak for the broadcast, which is Sunday, August 3, at 8 pm CDT. Please listen, and then blog afterward. I assure you, we are thoroughly unpretentious and a hell of a lot of fun, and there are no bullshit intellectual hurdles to clear. Just come as yourself. Only open arms—and minds—await you.
We all look forward to seeing/hearing/reading/experiencing you there.

I keep hearing so many good things about this book. I may have to participate.
So, Bo, your plan is to go around the internet pimping our club and guilting people into joining? Well, okay then.
It’s true what you say, though; none of us DOES have time for this, but we love it so much and get so much out of it that we FIND the time. I adore the DSBC, and I can’t imagine not being a part of it. Hopefully, we can hook at least a few new participants; I’ll post something on my site(s), too.
I’m going to admit something here. I have no idea what a “podcast” is.
Gerry, a podcast (at least, the way WE do it) is just like a radio call in show. The three of us call into a central number and, though I’m a little hazy on the details as SaintSeester runs the show, we get recorded and saved on a site. Whenever I log into iTunes, it automatically goes to that site and downloads whatever episodes I’ve not yet gotten, so I can listen to them on the iPod. As best I can tell, that’s what podcasts are – downloadable audio stuff that can be transfered onto portable devices for listening later (like, on the train during your commute and such). They’re usually subscription things, and they’re really kinda neat. I’ve got subscriptions to “Great Speeches in History,” NPR’s “Intelligence Squared” and Princeton University Podcasts in addition to the Dark and Stormy.
Indeed. Mrs. Chili, thanks for the answer. I had meant to respond and it slipped my mind.
All the coolest kids are putting the Dark and Stormy Book Club’s radio show on their iPods, btw.
Our 1984 podcast is really good. Some kid is going to appreciate it when they have to read the book in high school. I’m thinking of looking up the books I hated then. We could do them. But, then again, I’d have to kill myself if someone suggested those books today. I didn’t like many of them.
I’m running screaming through the night if one of you picks Pride and Prejudice.
Other than that, I think I’m good.
I loved Pride and Prejudice. Okay here’s my short list of hatred: The Scarlet Letter, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Grapes of Wrath.
