I’ve long asserted that Isaac Hayes possesses more natural coolness than anyone else on the planet. At last, some kind soul has posted on YouTube the ultimate proof: the video for 1979’s “Don’t Let Go.”
“Isaac Hayes is pretty cool. But the coolest on the planet? How you figure, Bo?” OK, check it out. It’s not hard to find him being cool in something cool. I could make an inductive case that way. But the true indicator is “how cool is he in something ridiculous?”
Name one other guy on the planet who could do this so suavely. This is a bad disco video to an okay disco song, and it might give you a chuckle or two. But looking back from 2007, it’s an effin’ freakshow with anyone but Hayes at the helm. Look at what he’s wearing! Check out the swaying! And yet, the cool will not be denied.
Isaac Hayes is the man.

Mrs. Chili, I did read your blog entry–it sounded like something Lea would have written. She eyeballs the babes for me too. 🙂
Other cool guys; let’s see. I’ll stay with the coolest of the cool, and not those with intermittent coolness. Gary Busey, for example, could be one serious badass cool guy, but his career is littered with so much dopey stuff too it’s hard to include him.
That said: hmmm. Samuel L. Jackson, definitely. Tough to argue with Sean Connery. Robert De Niro is formidably cool, even as the dad in Meet the Parents. Posthumous awards to John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, and Telly Savalas.
That’s good for now. What are your thoughts?
I’m going to go with Avery Brooks (LOVED him as Hawk in Spenser for Hire; oh, how I fantasized about that man!), and Bruce Willis (excepting Hudson Hawk, of course). Bono is pretty cool (despite what Ebonics Boy may think), as is Sting. I’m also going to go with Robert Redford – for the same reasons I think Bono and Sting are cool; talented men who are concerned with more than chicks and cars – these guys are using their influence to try to affect real change in the world. That’s cool.
Marlon Brando (at least on film) was coooool. Bette Davis – Ultracool.
I almost said Brando. Bette Davis–good call.
I have to agree with Samuel L. Jackson, John Wayne and Sean Connery for the cool list. I would probably add Donald Sutherland to my list. As for the females, Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn. I think eventually Reese Witherspoon will make my female list but she’s just to young right now…too much time left to really screw it up.
And, yes, I point out women that I think Bo will like. I think I’m pretty good about picking out his “type”. 😉
