Thursday miscellanea #240

  • Let us not forget that it’s a wickedly dangerous pursuit.  RIP, Jason Leffler.
  • Summer has arrived. Haven’t had a true cheese dip day yet, but we got close yesterday.
  • I’m worried about Oliver.  A trip to the vet yesterday confirmed what I’d already figured out with an alarmed rub across his abdomen—he’s dropped a quarter of his body weight.  We’re waiting for lab results now, and pulling for hyperthyroidism.  That’s highly treatable.
  • Sony has dealt Microsoft serious misery months before the consoles are out.  The PS4, unlike the Xbox One, doesn’t require constant connection, and there are no complications with used games.  (Also, it’s $100 cheaper.)  Come on, Microsoft.  Help me remain in your corner.
  • I’ve exhausted all of the power tool and tech avenues for my dad for gifts.  So I’m pleased I thought of a good gift for him for Father’s Day.  It lies in that golden zone of things he’d like to have, but that he’s too cheap to buy himself.  I’ll share it after the weekend, because it’s a rich vein of gift ore to mine for those hard-to-please ones on your list.
  • They pulled the only (largely) intact Dornier Do-17 “flying pencil” bomber from the English Channel this week.  That’s pretty cool.
  • Was discussing a northern bypass with some colleagues earlier this week. How about turning Nick Davis into interstate from Research Park Boulevard to I-65? Is that far enough north?

  1. Hey Bo! In Maryland for the week. Been meaning to ask you a couple of things:

    1. Father’s Day suggestions for the gaming hub
    2. what’s up with the road block crap I keep seeing on FB from last weekend?

Hope Oliver is okay…just went through putting Baby down not too long ago.

  2. Little bit of trivia for you about Dornier. As most people know, some kidney stones can be broken apart using a machine known as a lithotriptor. This machine effectively focuses sound waves on stones in the body as the sound waves break the sound barrier while passing through a water bath in which the patient is immersed. Dornier got the idea for such a machine after noticing that when their planes broke the sound barrier while it was raining there were multiple dents in the metal body of the plane created by this reaction. Dornier released the gold standard lithotriptor about 30 years ago and treatment of stones has never looked back.

  3. Marianne, it’s not particularly creative, but Microsoft Points would be a good gift. I imagine Jeff never has enough of those. The roadblocks are concerning. I posted on them earlier this week. Preparing a round of communication to go out this weekend.

Dave, that’s a cool story! Thanks for sharing.

‘seester, we can’t be sure because he was grown when we got him, but we think about 9. Just got his lab results. His kidney and thyroid functions are fine, which is not exactly good news because hyperthyroidism was one of the least scary things that could be wrong with him.

He’s very anemic. There are a couple of infections that can cause this. Our vet wants to treat him with antibiotics and steroids for a week and see how he responds. We need to pull hard for him to get well, because if this doesn’t work then there aren’t really any “he’ll be fine” explanations left. 🙁

And thank y’all for your well wishes.

  4. The Do-17 story is cool. I think that’s one of the first models I ever built when I was a kid. I’m getting back into WWII aircraft now, as my son for some reason has decided he’s fascinated by it.

Looks like it’s time to put some shelves up in his room and get him into model building. I think Snap-Tite is still around…

  5. My first model was a yellow Porsche 911 Carrera. Mostly, Dad built that one while I “helped.” The first one I did mostly myself was R2-D2.
