Thursday miscellanea #88

  • I’m looking forward to seeing “my Nashville crew” next month.  I went up for an old high school classmate’s birthday party last year, and now have lots of fun acquaintances with whom I keep up on Facebook.
  • Our esteemed president’s latest foreign policy triumph is for his administration to apologize to China—a country that operates a gulag—for Arizona’s illegal immigration law.  Yes, really.  “A bunch of left-wing undergraduates come to power,” indeed.
  • We have some fancy new grocery store that you can’t yet walk in for all the people.  Going to be quite some time before I find myself in there.  Besides, I really like Publix.
  • The 94th running of the Indianapolis 500 is just a bit more than a week away.  I’m pretty pumped, of course.  I’ve enjoyed Tony Kanaan’s tweets about happenings at the track.
  • Held a 2010 penny in my hand for the first time yesterday.  It looks like an arcade token.
  • I had my first Five Guys burger recently for lunch.  It was an honest and uncomplicated bacon cheeseburger (with American cheese, as God intended), which was appealing and refreshing.  I’m tired of overthought burgers at stuff-on-the-walls.  (Incidentally, you should figure two adults per small order of Five Guys fries.)
  • Loving that Snarlin’ Arlen Specter has drowned in his naked opportunism.  You’re fired, jackass.  Enjoy your involuntary retirement.

  1. I’m getting really tired of Obama’s grovelling. Why can’t he see it isn’t doing any good. He seems to have this sophomoric belief that if we unilaterally act nice the rest of the world will reciprocate. All I can say is… Dude, pick up a history book and read… Human nature has never really changed. People are only friendly with each other if it’s in their perceived self interest. It seems like Obama’s obsequious manner has led to more attempted terrorist attacks than less.

I agree with you on Five Guys. My wife and I enjoyed a meal there last month. I tried to order two small fries along with the burgers and the cashier actually told me that one order would be plenty for both of us! I was doubtful but she turned out to be right! I’ll be going back.

I also got one of those weird pennies the other day. I first saw it tail side up and thought someone had slipped me a bus token in my change.

  2. Trust me – it takes more than two adults to finish a small fry around here. HSH likes to blow the cashier’s mind by ordering burgers with everything.

How many days left until 2012?

  3. You forgot about Obama inviting another country’s head-of-state to address our Congress and essentially scold us. Nice.

  4. Folks, I don’t know what to say except what I’ve said already: we’re in this strange, horrible wonderland right now, and we’ve got to find our way out of it.

As cynical as I am, I still have the greatest hope for the American spirit. I suspect it shall survive, but we must hamstring the son-of-a-bitch in the White House with a non-complicit Congress in November. Then it’s two years of amateurish bitching, and run him back to Chicago.
