Thursday miscellanea #604

  • Willard Scott, America’s weatherman and the first Ronald McDonald, has died at 87. God be with his family and friends.
  • Down 19 pounds this morning at my doctor’s appointment. She’ll get another look in seven weeks. Shooting for 10 more by then. I’ve lost all of this weight before, but it still has to be done again, so it’s still progress.
  • So my longtime friend Dave posed an interesting question: what’s a film you’ve seen that you enjoyed, but had no desire to see again? The one that immediately came to my mind was given by him as an example (Requiem for a Dream). I’m not sure I have another answer.
  • I finished The Wire earlier this week. I put it about where I put The Americans. The writing, acting, and cinematography are all excellent, and I enjoyed it consistently once I got into it. I’m not sure it’s an all-time great show, but it’s a very good one. Of course, the general elevation of the craft (which is substantial) over the intervening years certainly makes The Wire less of a standout now than it was when it was new.
  • Want three TV/movie bullets? The trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is out. I thought the first Matrix film raised the bar, but I regarded neither of the sequels highly (and they had entertaining trailers too). It looks as if I’ll be able to see The Matrix Resurrections for “free” on HBO Max, so I probably will. But my expectations are low.
  • It’s one of a very few weekends with football and IndyCar! Happy dance!
  • Looking pretty seasonal out there for the next couple of weeks, campers. As unpleasant a few periods as we’ve had over the past six weeks or so, this does not appear to be a year in which we’re going to blaze into October. (And truthfully, I never stop eating chili, but it is better when it’s cool outside, isn’t it?)
