Thursday miscellanea #573

  • Hal Holbrook has died at 95. I never saw his Mark Twain show, but I appreciated him and his talent in every appearance I did see. RIP.
  • Saigon is the latest COVID-19 restaurant casualty in the area, and another of my personal favorites gone. They always did a ton of lunch business, and we still don’t have significant numbers of people going to the office. Makes me sad. They had the best pho in the area.
  • Lea and I have two episodes to go on River on Britbox. It’s a police procedural but with an interesting twist. (It also stars one of our favorites, Nicola Walker.) Have a go at it if that sounds appealing to you.
  • I’m getting back into DXing a bit. There’s a lot less to hear on shortwave now (thanks mostly to the Internet), but there are still things to find. Even regular old AM/MW DXing is a lot of fun, with all of the clear-channel stations to hunt. I bought a GE Superadio III “back in the day,” and batterying it up and having a go is just as fun as it ever was.
  • Super Bowl LV is Sunday. (Not sure whether I’m allowed to even call it that. Come get me, NFL lawyers.) I’ve only predicted two football games in public this year, but I got really close on both final scores (as in for each game, I guessed one team’s score exactly and missed the other team’s score by three points). So I’ll jump out there and say Chiefs 34, Buccaneers 29.
  • Lea purchased the air fryer top for her Instant Pot, so now we have an air fryer. So far we’ve only done frozen chicken tenders and French fries, but I am considerably impressed with the results. We’re trying some wings soon on multiple recommendations.
  • Snow late next week? Seems like every time I look the forecasted temperatures go down and the forecasted precipitation percentages go up.
