Thursday miscellanea #487

  • Winter temperatures are definitely here. I enjoy the convenience of purchasing refrigerated groceries at lunch and being able to leave them in the car, which has been an option on more than one day recently.
  • I am happy to see Alabama in the playoff, and especially happy to see it come in such satisfying—if nerve-racking—fashion. I’d hate to think Tua will lose the Heisman with one bad performance, but I fully expect Alabama to dominate Oklahoma, so that will be statement enough either way.
  • Urban Meyer says he is stepping down as head football coach of Ohio State after their bowl game, and says he believes he will not coach again. This is, again, for a health concern, and although I certainly wish him no ill will, I’ve had just about enough of him in general. College football will be better without him.
  • Robert Wickens is making considerable progress, and I have no doubt we’ll see him in an IndyCar again. Hang tough, man.
  • Gene Simmons’ mother Flora Klein has died at 92. A Hungarian Jew, she and her brother were the only members of her family to survive internment in Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Gene adored his mother. God be with him and everyone close to her. RIP.
  • Lea says she’ll see Aquaman with me. I think there’s nearly no way this movie can be bad. Surely there has been heroic effort to inoculate it against the pre-release ridicule.
  • I’ve decided I’m tired of acknowledging other people’s sneezes, as well as acknowledging their acknowledgments of mine. So I’m not saying bless you, gesundheit, or anything else anymore, and I’m not replying to you if you say it to me. I will continue to say excuse me when I sneeze.
