- We enjoyed the first big college football weekend at my house, though I did something I can’t recall ever doing before as an adult: I went to bed while Alabama was still playing. Now clearly I wouldn’t have done this had the outcome not been certain from very early on, but still. It’s an interesting shift.
- I never understood the degree to which my dad couldn’t tell modern cars apart. With the current crop of compact crossovers, I finally get it. They’re even sharing front and rear end treatments, which used to be significant differentiators. I have to look at nameplates for many small wagony things these days. I can still reliably ID sedans—for now.
- The local minor league baseball team has been christened the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Some people think this is great. Others are borderline apoplectic. I’ll buy a shirt. I’ll buy a jersey, if they’re cool. Maybe I’ll go to a game.
- I’m happy to have Hot August Night III as a final live document of one of the greatest showmen of my lifetime. Though it is a good performance with a set list to please just about anyone, I prefer the Hot August Night NYC show. (And of course, I never had any expectation that it would approach the first Hot August Night.) I hate to start saying goodbye to Neil Diamond. I’m so glad I got to see him live.
- The flax seed cracker recipe is definitely a work in progress. I tried with flax meal first. That was easier to handle, but the fishy taste was pretty prominent. The ones I made with whole seeds came out better, but I had to do them for three hours at 200º, which is basically drying them out instead of baking them. They would hold up to dips and salsas, though. Stay tuned.
- Finished the first season of The End of the F***ing World. It was OK. Jessica Barden pretty much walks off with it. I think the short per-episode run time was a major factor in sustaining my engagement. Don’t know if I’d have stayed with it in hour-long chunks.
- It’s not reliably raining, but there is definitely a lot of tropical moisture out there from Gordon’s remnants, over there in Arkansas or so as I type. Whew. I’m definitely glad it’s not hotter.
