- College football begins in earnest tonight. (There was a Hawaii-Cal game sometime last week.) I’m pleased, but now it needs to be cool. I’d have put chili in the slow cooker this morning if it wasn’t going to be 85 degrees when SC/Vandy starts. I may make a pot of chili sometime this weekend anyway.
- My feelings about football are tracking in interesting directions these days. Alabama has not been this dominant since the ’70s. In fact, it’sĀ getting steadily more difficult to contest the assertion that Nick Saban’s Alabama is the most dominant college team of all-time. This pleases me, but I think I have my eyes more open than ever about some aspects of the college football machine. I may have a think piece or two on it.
- Right now synthetic sapphire is the most scratch-resistant material available for wristwatch crystals, but Corning is making interesting noise about its Gorilla Glass SR+. It’ll depend on how close it comes to sapphire’s scratch resistance, and how much lower the cost is. (I’ve never once in 20+ years scratched a sapphire crystal.)
- I thought this was cool. They know the Alabama sturgeon is not yet extinct because they have detected its DNA in the Alabama River. That’s excellent evidence that it was swimming around in the past one to six weeks.
- Congratulations to Kyle Larson on getting his first Sprint Cup victory at Michigan last weekend! He seems to be such a fine young man (and sportsman) in interviews. It’s easy to like him.
- I put some plain Greek yogurt in a burrito last night as a substitute for sour cream, and it worked very well. I’m intrigued. I think stroganoff would be the ultimate acid test. May have to try that.
- I just learned I have a friend driving straight into Hermine. We were texting, so not a lot of exposition, but I’m guessing she’s saying “yeah, it’s going to be windy and rainy for a couple of days, but then I’ll have the rest of my vacation.”
