- Spring Break week is tough. My entire family lies around while I have to get up. It’s harder than it sounds.
- So Fall Out Boy’s “Centuries” includes an unambiguous and prominent bit of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner.” When I was researching whether she was credited as a writer on “Centuries” (she is), I learned that “Tom’s Diner” was the song used in tests to determine the most effective compression for the MP3 file format. Consequently, Suzanne Vega is known as “the mother of the MP3.” Did you know that? I didn’t. Pretty cool.
- Joe Gariagiola has died at 90. RIP.
- As of two weeks ago, we do not own a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it. In fact, the average mileage for the three vehicles we own is ~136,000, and the newest one—the Technical Writing Express—is 8 years old. Everything’s running great—God bless Mobil 1—but we need Lea’s 12-year-old van to last a few more months, at least. We replace it, then Nathan gets the TWE, and I get something fun to drive with a standard. A three- or four-year-old GTI or Civic Si sounds about right. I miss shifting.
- I’ve backed off my intent to stay all the way off caffeine after Lent is over. I’m going to have a big cup of coffee Easter morning. However, I’m going to make a concerted effort to consume caffeine sparingly going forward.
- There are credible reports that AC/DC shall become the next legendary rock band to come to a cartoonish end. It seems Brian Johnson may have been fired, and Axl Rose is slated to tour with the band.
- We have a few cool nights in the forecast, but no freeze in sight. Spring may stick.

My 6 year old Fusion is closing in on 135,000 miles. I parked it in the garage last year and started using rentals for everything work related, which I should have done a year sooner. Now I put fewer than 200 miles a month on it.
It looks great, but you know that feeling you get that soon something expensive will pop up? I’m grappling with trading it in while it still has some value. But… it’s paid off. What to do, what to do?
On the subject of manual transmission, I used to love shifting. Now I love applying the brake and easing off the brake while sitting in traffic. My shifting days are far behind me.
Also, Nathan is old enough to drive? That is simply not possible!
Taller than I am too.
And it’s not quite as bang-bang-bang as I made it sound. He’ll be 16 late next year, not this year. I’ll drive it until then.
