Thursday miscellanea #315

  • We’ll see the 50s again on Saturday. Supposed to be sunny, even.
  • I like the food at Phuket, but I’ve nearly always got the place mostly to myself. Even at dinnertime, it’s never much past half full. Obviously the place is making it, but I’ve never once waited to sit. (Get only Thai here, not sushi. The quality of the sushi is fine; it’s just really high.)
  • Well, an Ohio state university won the national title. Urban Meyer is a great coach but a bit of a jerk, and Alabama’s next shot at him can’t come too soon. Oregon? Thank you; drive through. Enjoy your ever-changing silly shirts. They’re your signature feature. Congratulations.
  • It’s always been easy to dislike Kurt Busch because he manages to stand out as a jackass amongst jackasses, but the guy might really need help. He’s now insisting his ex is a trained assassin, and claims she has done things like left the house in fatigues and returned in a trench coat over a bloody evening gown. Friends? Family? Intervention?
  • Incidentally, between crap like this, the street brawls, and the consistently mediocre quality of racing, I think I’ll just go back to ignoring NASCAR. Danica, please come back to IndyCar.
  • Saw my first Kia K900 in the metal on the road yesterday. The driver was a 70ish woman. Car and Driver says it’s basically a modern interpretation of a Lincoln Town Car, so maybe that’s about right. It’s a good-looking and feature-packed car, but I just don’t think a $60,000 Kia is going to be a thing.
  • My knee is most of the way back to normal, and I am thankful. I recommend this splint/brace highly. You might think about ordering another gel pack too, so you can always have a cold one. I didn’t think about that.
  • I finally got my Amazon Echo invitation. Amazon.com says I’ll get it in a little more than three months. Wow. I don’t doubt that it might take a while, but I wonder if it’ll really be quite that long. Or could this be more customer research, i.e. “let’s see if he still pulls the trigger with that kind of lead time”?

  1. I’ve seen a black Hyundai Equus twice now. I don’t think it was the same one. The first time I saw it, I was actually at a gas station and it was on the other side of the pump, so I got to see some parts of it from semi-close up.

I actually had no idea what I was looking at. The gentleman driving it was a very GQ businessman looking fella, so I figured it was some fancy European sedan from a company I wasn’t terribly familiar with. But the badge looked kinda hokey.

Sure enough, as soon as I got back in my car and googled it, it was a Hyundai. It looked pretty nice, but I still have my reservations about long term quality of the Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

    • The K900 is the same platform as the Equus—basically a stretched first-generation Genesis. I think the Equus is attractive too, but I find the front end styling a bit dissonant.

Dad has had a Genesis for about four years now and couldn’t be any happier (and I’ve gotten to drive it on a couple of road trips, and it’s a fantastic long-distance cruiser). That I can recall, the only thing that has given him trouble is one of the motors in the adjustable steering wheel. It was replaced under warranty.

  2. Um. You are aware, aren’t you, that Saban is a bit of a jerk, right? Maybe arrogance is a key ingredient for reaching that level of success. There are not any other coaches in college football in their league right now.

I have to add my two cents regarding LSU’s hire of Kevin Steele. Bwahahahaha! This man’s defensive schemes are a train wreck.

    • True enough. I am distinguishing between flavors of jerk. Saban would not call his two remaining timeouts in the final minute of a game his team was winning 49-10, as Meyer did vs. Georgia in 2008. Saban would have won the national title game 35-20, not 42-20. Arrogance is one thing. Poor sportsmanship is another.
