Thursday miscellanea #291

  • Eight weeks from tonight. Only eight weeks!
  • Lindsay Lohan is suing the makers of Grand Theft Auto V for some skank character she says is her without her permission. Sigh. I certainly wish she’d make news for a different reason.
  • I can encounter gristle in a steak and keep trucking, no problem. But if I put chicken gristle in my mouth—particularly if it’s something in which I’ve cut up boneless, skinless pieces like for pasta and I just missed it—then I instantly lose my appetite. Weird, eh?
  • Better Call Saul will take place before, during, and after Breaking Bad. I do believe we’ll see Walter White! I want to know more about Mike, too. He’s one of my favorite characters, and I’d like to see him deepened a bit. Can’t believe I’m going to watch current serial television again, but there it is.
  • The IndyCar Series at Pocono is about 50 times as exciting as NASCAR at Pocono. Check out the Pocono IndyCar 500 Sunday at noon on NBC Sports Network.
  • Ran into a high school friend at trivia night at Blue Pants. He has an HVAC business. I can reasonably expect to be a customer of such soon, so while it was fun hanging with you, it’s good to see you for that reason too, Joe!
  • I enjoyed following the United States in the World Cup with my family, and I’m proud of our team’s effort. Soccer remains too obnoxious in some key ways for me to ever keep up with it week in and week out.

  1. Bo, I love college football, but soccer is a close second. I grew up playing it at Fort McClellan and really solidified my love for it when living in Korea. You have to admit that it sounds pretty funny (ironic?) for a college football fan to call out soccer fans for being obnoxious. I think each sport has its extreme fanatics and it seems the World Cup coverage here focused on those, just like ESPN does with focusing on the crowd and their stupid signs during College Gameday. I enjoy watching English Premier League, especially the teams that have prominent American players. When the World Cup hype dies down, give it another chance. Not all fans put a roll of toilet paper on a Tide box, do they? 🙂

    • Heh! I was mostly referring to the clock rules above, though part of it is fan commentary. I get what you’re saying, and I don’t fault soccer fans for their passion or craziness. The fan I can’t stand is the one who can’t stop at “my favorite game is great” and just has to add some flavor of “and superior to all others.” That gets most of the way to anti-Americanism right off the bat because so many sports are more culturally significant than soccer in the United States.
