Thursday miscellanea #257

  • We adopted Nathan’s dog Molly from a shelter. We boarded her to go to the beach last weekend. I was really worried Lea would get her to the vet; she’d have a look at the many other dogs, fencing, etc.; and start wailing. No-no-no-not-this-again-I’ll-be-good-I’ll-be-soooooooo-good-pleeeeeeeease-don’t-leave-me-here! Fortunately, she jumped right in. She was excited about making new friends.
  • On the way back from Anaheim Chili yesterday, I stopped by The Fresh Market. I had never visited there before. The obvious overhead was impressive from the second I stepped in the door. But it did not appear to be consistent with saving money, and indeed, it wasn’t. There are some interesting things in there, though. They might find a niche in our evolving consumption habits.
  • Speaking of, I have multiple posts coming that detail my responses to this hundred pounds of essay still sitting on my chest. Even though I think most of this shouldn’t be political, it remains that most of it is considered such. As I try to keep Thursday miscellanea politics-free, I won’t get into specifics here. Just know it’s on the way.
  • It is becoming absolutely laughable to me that people actually think the playoff system in place for college football for 2014 is going to be significantly better than the BCS. I read yesterday that no one’s individual ballot will be released. Well, that’s just as impenetrable as the computer programs to which we pretended to be beholden. There’s perhaps a little more satisfaction here because there’s an actual on-field component, but still, team five is going to wail, folks. And let’s talk about the first time two SEC teams get in. Sheesh. A playoff system that uses conference champions is the only good solution, and has the bonus of leveling the recruiting playing field quite a bit.
  • The last IndyCar race of the 2013 season is Saturday night, and it’s 500 miles on a fast oval, and again the season championship has come down to the final race. I’m a happy man. I say again:  if you like auto racing and you’re not following IndyCar, you should be. Commit to watching the 2014 season through the Indianapolis 500 and see what you think. It’s a thoroughly entertaining thing to follow while college football isn’t going on.
  • We have several evenings in the 40s coming, and if you’ll look down the calendar a bit, some 30s are forecast. You know, I don’t mind that so much. That’s a pot of chili. That’s a snifter of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel for dessert. That’s a snuggle with your lady.
  • (It’s really easy for me to talk like that when we haven’t had a severe winter in several years. Remind me of that bullet the next time we have ten days in a row below freezing.)
  • I had a blast using my Windows 8 tablet with a keyboard and mouse as our only computer on our trip. It made me want a touch-screen monitor for my home desktop system. Wow, they’re expensive.
  • I bragged on Bates House of Turkey in my Gulf Shores recap. I just found out that Mr. Bates died only two months ago. RIP.

  1. Summer was exceedingly pleasant, the most memorable in at least a decade for me. So, I fear that payback is coming. Also, some wooly bear sightings. And my Mom says her cat is predicting a lot of snow, so there’s that.

  2. Talking BCS vs playoffs for NCAA championships… I think you’re walking a fine line on politics there Bo… Football is politics in the SEC.

  3. 1. Your dog is excited about making new friends. My dog rubbed her nose on the cage so much she came home with a sore, and they reported to us mid-trip that she refused to eat. Good facility, but never again. We don’t travel without Freckles from now on.

    2. I loves me some Fresh Market. Trouble is, it’s over 45 miles round-trip to either one in this area, so it’s truly a treat.

    4. When the BCS makes the playoffs actually count for something more than a bit of bread and circuses to keep the people quiet, I’ll start caring about the outcome.

    5. I still like F1 better.

    6. Looking forward to REAL football weather soon. Maybe. Someday. Wish it WOULD cool off around here.

  4. Until all conferences involved have a championship game (looking at you Big 12), I’m not interested in an all-conference-champ playoff. What I AM interested in is a format that gives the SEC more opportunities to make the playoffs, hence, a better shot for Alabama. So I respectfully disagree with you on this one. 🙂

  5. ‘seester, Marianne, is there really anything to that?

    Tahm, good point.

Kelly, Fresh Market is that far from my house too, though it’s closer to work. I haven’t been able to get into F1, though I still watch a race once in a while to see if I’ll click into it.

Jenny, I loved that Alabama got in the title game in ’11, but I definitely see it the other way too. What I like about using conference champions more than anything else is that it would probably increase parity in recruiting, which I don’t think is a bad thing.
