Thursday miscellanea #191

  • Three years ago we had a late hard freeze—like a week into April or so—and it was absolute hell on the mosquito population.  They were all but undetectable through most of June, and they never rose above minor annoyance the entire season.  We’re having the opposite of that this year.  It’s early June, and there are clouds of them.  By late August, we dare not sit outside at dusk for 15 minutes in a row, lest we bleed out.
  • I’ve really had a marvelous time helping out in the kitchen at Vacation Bible School this week.  I love our church and am so proud to be part of it.
  • We are upon three IndyCar ovals in a row—starting with Texas this Saturday night.  Sadly, that’ll be it until the last race of the year.  This season is 69% road and street courses, and while I’ve learned to enjoy them much more than I did, I still prefer an oval race.  Here’s hoping next year is back to 50/50 or so.
  • It’s hard to find a funnier 30 minutes than The Wrong Trousers.  It’s on streaming Netflix, too.
  • So now I’m thrown for a bit of a loop with my Hunger Games trilogy plan.  Saintseester told me over lunch on Tuesday that she disliked Catching Fire so much that she didn’t even read Mockingjay.  It’s okay, though.  Now I have a challenge in trying to assess what her problem with it was.  Don’t tell me in a comment, ‘seester.  I want to finish the book and see if I can guess.
  • Dear Notre Dame football:  get your haughty asses in a conference.
  • Taco Bell’s ramping it up with more upscale menu items.  This is just the cycle coming back around.  Do you know that when I worked there, there were three different complex dinners that contained items not available elsewhere on the menu?  Tough to imagine against the current menu structure, isn’t it?

  1. Is it just me, or did all the churches plan their VBS for the same week? When I was a kid, Mom would send us to the Baptist VBS, the Presbyterian VBS, and the Methodist VBS, just to get us out of the house for three weeks of the summer. They all had different programs, too, instead of the prepackaged stuff. I guess the churches got tired of being the free babysitters.

  2. I drove past one tonight that had it this week, but I can’t remember where.

I only ever went to Episcopalian VBS as a child. I remember it being fun, though I don’t remember it being quite so physical as what they’re doing these days.
