Talking in front of your kids

Until your kids can read, it’s easy to talk about whatever you want right in front of them.  You just have to spell it.

It’s a lot more challenging once your only option is talking above their vocabularies.  It’s doable—for example, this morning when Lea and I were talking about Aaron’s birthday, a “Lego gift card” became “a financial instrument exchangeable for a popular Danish creative building medium”—but it won’t be for much longer.  Soon the capability will vanish into vapor.

I hope you have a good weekend.

  1. Agreed…as their language skills get better and we appear to become less intelligent (just ask my 18yo daughter, she knows everything), it becomes more and more difficult to have conversations with them in the room.

Love the alternate description of the gift card.
