Constantine “Gus” Koutroulakis, owner and operator of Pete’s Famous Hot Dogs on 2nd Avenue in Birmingham since 1948, died this morning at his home. He was 81.
As a boy, I remember very well going with my dad to Birmingham on car-related business—auctions, shows, swapping vehicles with his friend Jay, or whatever—and frequently a trip to Pete’s Famous would make the agenda. Been back a couple of times as an adult.
The place is about the size of a large walk-in closet inside; any more than three or four customers, and the line’s out the door. You get your (super-delicious and grilled to crisp perfection!) hot dog; you eat it standing up; Gus asks if you want another; you eat it (if you said yes); and you pay on the way out.
Pete’s Famous was closed today while Gus’s family makes arrangements. I think it may take them a while to figure out what to do. I can’t imagine the place without him. No one can.
Make mine one all-the-way, one special, and a Co-Cola, Gus. Thanks. RIP.
