- Representative Giffords is standing, reading, and even rubbed her husband’s shoulders and back this week. Wow! She’s moving to a rehabilitation center in Houston tomorrow.
- Expectations are rather modest for tonight’s snowfall, and that suits me fine. As long as we waited for the big event, it really doesn’t take long to get over it, does it?
- True Grit was good. It’s closer to the 1969 film than I expected—some of it scene by scene—but there are numerous differences in the details. (I understand it’s more faithful to the novel than was the first film.) There are a few Coen touches here and there, but not many; this is easily the most straightforward film they’ve ever made.
- Ron Franklin sues. No word in the article on whether he has a girl lawyer.
- Award shows usually stay all the way off my radar, but I’ve been reading here and there that this fellow Ricky Gervais made a bit of a stir at the Golden Globes. Mean jokes, was it? And there’s an uproar? (I read some of the transcript and thought he was funny.) Poor Hollywood. Poor haughty, self-congratulatory, insular, thin-skinned Hollywood.
- Saintseester and I met for a light lunch and a few laps around the mall yesterday. I rather like the mall in January, except for the kiosk barker who inquired whether we’d “heard of the new power band.” (Maybe it was power ring? It was a bracelet.)
- Well, Poe didn’t get his flowers and booze for the second year in a row. I’d say keeping it up from 1949 to 2009, and then missing two years in a row, might be a good indicator that he’s just handing them to him now.

_True Grit_ was good, but not great. And that’s just fine, because it never had aspirations to be great. It was fun and comfortable being what it was. I’m not sure how one defines a “Coen movie,” but it is definately NOT Miller’s Crossing or Fargo or anything in between. Bridges was serviceable, but I did hear more of The Dude than The Duke in the performance. Matt Damon impresses me more and more. He did good things with his performance and he might have surpassed Edward Norton on my list of American actors. Well worth the trip. Thanks.
Good time, man! Enjoyed it.
