Melanie is my former mentor and one of my closest friends and favorite people in the world, and she’s 49 YEARS OLD today. I’d put up a photo of her—she is a totally babealicious hot blonde—but she’d freak out. I’d also send you to her blog or web page to congratulate/harass her, but she doesn’t have one. (I told her today that she needs a Facebook page, at least, but I’m not holding my breath.)
I mused that it might be her next-to-last perfect square, but she’s pretty sure she’ll make it to 81, so we’ll call it her next-to-next-to-last perfect square.
I gave her the run of northern Alabama and southern Tennessee for her birthday lunch today, but she still chose Viet Huong. I (completely realistically) estimate that we’ve eaten there 300 times. It was good, as always.
We went to Sam’s afterwards for a walk and a look around, where I turned up “Hells Bells” louder and louder on a demonstration stereo until she got embarrassed enough to walk away. (I must say, she held out longer than I thought she would. It was pretty damned loud.)
Incidentally, today is the last day you’ll catch me making a spontaneous and unconsidered appearance in a retail establishment until perhaps January 5. My hiatus traditionally begins November 15, and ends the first Monday after the first weekend of the new year.
I’ll still have to make a few exceptions. We’re going to run out of dog food at least once, so I’ll have to make a trip to Costco for that. And I’m sure there will be a Lowe’s/Home Depot run in there somewhere, though I can do that very early in the morning and minimize the insanity.
But a mall? Or Bridge Street? Not a chance in hell.
Happy Birthday, Melanie! Many more!

Oh, jeez! You’re gonna make me do MATH?! What’s a perfect square – a number times itself, right? So that makes 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, and 81, right?
How fricking pathetic am I that I don’t know this stuff?
Mrs. Chili: My tenth-grade geometry teacher made us memorize the perfect squares of 1 through 25, and I consider that one of the most valuable lessons of high school. You wouldn’t effin’ believe how often it comes in handy.
I had wonderful time, thanks! And you scoffed when I said I would make it 3 more times – 64, 81, and 100, but I’m flat out determined. 121, however, might be tough. 🙂 Thanks for a great time – no better gift than good times with good friends.
