Thursday miscellanea #10

  • “Linda” is a professional with whom I infrequently, but regularly, interact.  She provides insight on some of the logistical aspects of my job.  I don’t need her often, but when I do need her, I really need her, and she is invariably one of the most ceaselessly pleasant and competent people I’ve ever met.  I mean, Linda’s a real joy.  I think about how good I feel after I work with her, and then consider that I have that power too.  We all do.  She’s eminently emulable.  Folks, be nice to people.  It has real power.
  • You know, I just sort of have the feeling that Missouri is going to beat the hell out of Texas on Saturday night (as in by three or four touchdowns).  Texas is a good team, but they’re definitely not doing it with defense, and they’re about to face a pissed-off, something-to-prove Chase Daniel.
  • At 3 this afternoon, I marked one week since I quit smoking.  I’m feeling all right most of the time, and paying some slight prophylactic attention to my diet and habits, I’ve actually lost a little bit of weight.  One day at a time, and just let ’em build.
  • Yeah, I know there are hotels and restaurants and resorts and fun stuff like snow skiing in the desert in the United Arab Emirates, but let’s keep in mind that we’re still talking about a lot of Islamic fundamentalism.  If you don’t want to go to jail for three months, don’t drink and screw on the beach.
  • I try to stay away from blogging about bad driving because it’s so damned trite.  That said, here goes.  (Sorry.)  On my normally idyllic evening commute, you know what some asshole in a blue Cadillac CTS behind me did?  He blew his horn whenever the light turned green.  And I don’t mean he gave it a tap; I mean he pressed and held the horn for 10 or 15 seconds at a time.  Stop and count 15 seconds and imagine blowing a car horn that long.  He did it at two different lights.  Traffic was flowing fine, incidentally.  What the fuck, dude?
  • Lea and I are going to see Appaloosa soon.  It’s (sadly) relatively rare that both of us want to see a film, and I’m quite looking forward to it.  She’s a fun date.  Plus, she puts out.  Heh.
  • Jack Narz died yesterday.  I didn’t know him from the ’50s, obviously, but I remember his stint on the ’70s Concentration fondly.  RIP.
  • As much as I’ve learned in my life about shades and subtleties of emotion and spirit, today I believe more strongly than ever that some people are just bad, and that exploring the strata of their respective badnesses is just not interesting.  “Sometimes, bad is bad.” – Huey Lewis & the News

  1. If I’m expected to put out then I better be getting dinner and one of those yummy chocolate martinis, too. I may be cheap but I’m not free. 😉

Could they have a better cast for a Western short of John Wayne rising from the dead and galloping into town? If you’ve seen this movie and didn’t like it, I really don’t want to know…

  2. Fortunately, Mr. Chili’s and my tastes in movies are pretty similar. UNfortunately, we rarely go to the theatre alone. Sitters are hard to come by, and we know that we don’t have to wait too long for the DVD.

I’m always crowing the message about being nice to each other. Thanks for adding your voice to my little one-woman chorus.

Lea, atta girl! A lady’s gotta have her standards, after all.

Bo, I don’t know if it matters a bit to you, but I’m proud of your efforts to quit smoking. I grew up in a household where EVERY ADULT (aunts and uncles, grandparents, friends) smoked. It was torturous, and I’m pleased, on more than one level, that you’ve made the commitment to let it go.
