Thursday miscellanea #2

  • Soccer practice at Palmer Park was tonight. Nathan and Aaron were at opposite ends, so Lea went with Aaron and I took Nathan. Both fell in like round pegs. When it came time to name Nathan’s team, I suggested Ministers of Pain and Fuzzy Wuzzy Baby Bunny Rabbits, but neither one got any votes, and they chose Blue Dragons. Go figure. (On the way home, I thought of Joyous Minstrels. I’m sure that would have won.)
  • I shot a Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum at the range today. Wow. It was actually a little friendlier than I thought it would be, but my aim was for shit compared to the Glock 23, which I’ve come to like very much. I may sell my .38 and get one.
  • We only just watched The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe on Monday night. I loved these books as a child, and the film is fabulous (in Blu-ray!). All of my expectations were exceeded, and there was a bonus at the end. As I was basking in the experience and watching the credits roll, I was introduced to Alanis Morissette’s “Wunderkind.” I adore it. They lyrics are pure poetry, and the melody is hauntingly beautiful. This song hits my soul. Bravo, Alanis!
  • I had lunch with Saintseester and Melanie at Phuket yesterday. (By the way, this is decent Thai food, but it’s not where to eat sushi in this town—it’s half the size and twice the price of Mikawa, so it’s four times as expensive.) Being of similar demographic, intelligence, and general level of crassery, they got along famously. Melanie was/is a fawning groupie of ‘seester’s, but now that she’s met the legend, perhaps she’ll be sufficiently emboldened to comment once in a while. Heh.
  • I’m only just getting truly impatient for football to start, which is fine, because it’s only two weeks away! Alabama opens August 30 in the Georgia Dome against Clemson. Clemson’s starting the season #9 and the ACC favorite, which is the perfect time to beat them, if Alabama can muster it. We’ll see. Saban’s teams have a history of showing a lot of improvement in the second year.
  • I’m cautiously hoping that we’re out of the dog days. It’s only mid-August, but it’s actually been almost nice lately, and similar weather is wall to wall on the long-term forecast, so with a little luck… This time last year we were in the middle of 17 days in a row of 100+ ºF highs.
  • I stopped and (recreationally) took a close look at a 2005 Ford Expedition 4×4 Eddie Bauer for sale today—dark red over tan leather with 36,000 miles, and with absolutely every single toy you could put on one. It listed for more than $49,000 three years ago. The asking price was $19,000.  If you need and can afford to feed a full-size truck, this is the buyer’s market of a lifetime. It will never be better.
  • I’m a bit down on human nature this week. Folks, please do right by one another. Everything else follows.

  1. I always sound so preachy. Maybe I’m in a negativity space about “human nature.” Maybe I just pat myself on the back about the things I do “right,” and get some grim satisfaction from those who do things “wrong.”

    Peace.

  2. First of all, DAMMIT! You “said” it. You said the words about the nice weather we’ve been having, and now you just went and jinxed it. How could you? I blame the next heat wave on your idle fingers.

And, L’s team has been the green dragons and the blue angels. Thank God, no butterfly team names yet. I was more for the killer angels. But, whatever. Those other parents have no sense of humor.

    Happy weekend!

  3. There’s a mom in the pick up line at school that drives a huge, gleaming white SUV (maybe a Cadillac Escalade). I always get the urge to knock on her window and say, “So, you off-road much with this baby or do you use it to haul your fishing boat?” Granted, there are women in our school district that need a truck or SUV because they really do live on a farm or haul horse trailers to shows. You just know this chick is not one of them, though. She bought that SUV because it was “cooler” then a mini-van. So, not exactly a penis-extender but the same principle.

We may not utilize our truck as much as someone that lives on a farm or ranch does, but we certainly use ours enough of the time to warrant it staying in the family…just not as a daily driver.

  4. Aaron’s team is the Killer Bees. I keep saying “Save Up!”, which is the tag-line for the comic “Killer Beez”, who used to play locally quite a bit – so far, nobody has gotten the joke. I hate it when that happens…

I’m hopping on Gerry’s preachy wagon; do I, or do I not say this ALL THE TIME. It’s my life’s motto, and I’m trying to recruit as many people into similar thinking as I can.

Lea, the thing that KILLS me at the pick-up line is the people who not only drive the huge SUVs, but who sit there idling while waiting up to 15 minutes for the kids to come out. If I’m not moving for more than 20 SECONDS or so, I turn off the engine, and I drive a tiny little VW! GAH!

  6. I will admit that I do NOT turn my car off in the pick up line but only because I have a four year old in the van with me and it’s generally around 90 degrees (or more) that time of day in August. As the weather gets better, I will be able to turn the car off and open the windows, though. Even in the winter I probably will be able to put a couple of blankets in the car and still not have to leave it running the whole time. It’s just not an option right now, though. The van gets too hot too fast.
