We hit an even 99° at my house today, surpassing the previous hottest day of the year (yesterday), which came in at 98.8°. These numbers are, as always, a couple of degrees off the official readings for the Huntsville area. I’m guessing this is because of a mild urban heat island effect. (In the winter, our lows out here are lower too.)
The “relief” we were supposed to get this weekend has evanesced:
That’s what they were calling a “cool front” as recently as yesterday.
As bad as the days are, the period from sundown to midnight is worse. The temperature drops, but the humidity shoots back up. Generally I put the dogs up about 10:30, and readings of 87° and 55-60% relative humidity aren’t uncommon. That’s a heat index of more than 93°, and with the moon high in the sky and the dogs going to bed, that’s just wrong. I open the back door and step out, and it’s like I’m pushing into an endless sea of cheese dip.
Come on, autumn.

I took the kids to sonic today at 4pm to buy something with beaucoups ice. My car read 107 degrees, parked in the shade. Phah.
Endless sea of cheese dip. That’s really what it’s like, too.
Our temperature readings haven’t been quite THAT high, but we here in New England have been experiencing the one-two punch of heat and humidity over the last week. My teaching day is such that I get to work in the early morning and leave in the later afternoon. I park my little black VW Golf in the shade in the morning, but it’s been in full sun by the time I get to leave. Opening my door is like stepping into a little Mini-Bake Oven.
