Publix to give away seven antibiotics

Come in with a prescription and get a 14-day supply of any of seven different antibiotics at no charge. This follows a similar move last year by Meijer, a regional chain in the Midwest, which itself followed wide-ranging discount programs from large retailers like Target and Wal-Mart.

These retailers are risking a little short-term loss for the prospects of growing their pharmacy businesses long-term. The continuation of such programs seems to support the wisdom of such. The consumer benefit is obvious.

If there’s a downside to this, I can’t see it. Everybody wins.

Now I’m just taking a SpaghettiOs break here and don’t want to get into an involved treatment of supply, demand, competition, regulation, and the like now, but consider this question:

Do you think such moves by retailers are more or less likely with increased government intervention?
